Cricket Scotland has announced its final squad of 15 players who will represent their country at the forthcoming ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Queensland, Australia.
In a qualification period that started back in 2010 the young Scots did their country proud, recording 13 wins out of 14 competitive matches in total, and secured top-spot in the Global Qualifiers in Ireland in 2011.
A wide range of players have contributed to the squad's success up to this point, but with only 15 coveted places up for grabs, it has been a tough decision for the selectors to narrow it down to those who will go to the World Cup.
Paddy Sadler has been named as captain of the Scotland Under 19s and will be supported by Matthew Cross, who has been named vice captain. So far this season, both players have been performing well in the national MCCU Programme for Cambridge and Loughborough respectively. Paddy has been consistently taking wickets for Cambridge MCCU, and Matthew has been the top run scorer for Loughborough MCCU hitting over 700 runs so far this season, including 8 half centuries.
Freddie Coleman, who has represented the senior Scotland team this season, was named in the squad and yesterday became the recipient of the 2012 Walter Lawrence MCC Universities Award after scoring 141 against Durham MCCU on April 28.
Exciting prospects, Andrew Umeed, Aman Bailwal and Scott McElnea have this season featured for the Scotland Lions & Development XI and make the squad. Tom McBride and Ross McLean, who have impressed in domestic cricket in recent seasons, are also included as are Henry Edwards and Sam Page who both played prominent roles in the qualifiers last year.
Batsman, Peter Ross who was heavily involved in both of Scotland's dramatic wins over Ireland in the European and Global qualifying tournaments has recovered from recent shoulder surgery and takes his place.
Kyle Smith, who claimed a 5 wicket haul against Vanuatu, to clinch Scotland's spot in the World Cup is selected, as are county academy players Ruaidhri Smith and Gavin Main along with young batting prospect Nick Farrar.
The Squad is sponsored by The Parkmead Group plc, which is one of Scotland's fastest growing energy companies.
Scotland U19 Head Coach Craig Wright commented on the announcement of the squad: "We are in an extremely fortunate position with this group that we have real strength in depth, and in particular some of the younger players have made real progress and forced their way into the squad.
"That does however mean that selection is more difficult, and players have missed out on the squad who made a real contribution to the success of the team up to this point."
"The lads have earned the right to test themselves against the best age-group players in the world and I believe they have the attributes to give a good account of themselves in the competition?.
